Abstract
A retrospective study will be done at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital focusing on common
perioperative surgical complications of Caesarean Section at QECH. While many studies have been done in Malawi, none focused on common perioperative complications
of Caesarean section at central hospitals including QECH. This study aims to find out the common
perioperative surgical complications and their associated factors. QECH being referral hospital receives a
large number of patients across health facilities under Blantyre District Hospital and District Hospitals
under South West zone. The findings from this study would help formulate maternal and neonatal
health policies like improving Safe Motherhood program and implement actions that would improve the
outcome of caesarean. The broad objective for this study is to investigate the perioperative caesarean section complications
and their associated maternal and perinatal outcomes for women that had caesarean sections at QECH
in the first quarter of 2021.The specific objectives are to estimate the Proportion of Caesarean Section
complications at QECH, to describe the perinatal outcomes in patients that had perioperative caesarean
section complications and to determine the factors associated with perioperative Caesarean Section
complications in women operated at QECH. The target population will be all patients who underwent Caesarean Section at QECH from 1st January to
31stMarch 2021. The sample size for this study shall be 385 patients files selected. Data collection will
be obtained using simple random sampling. We are expected to find common perioperative surgical complications of cesarean section such as
hemorrhage, visceral injury, and extension of the uterine incision during extraction, wound infection and
thromboembolism and factors associated with the common perioperative surgical complication.
