    Evaluation study: Antimicrobial resistance responsive dialogue

    Executive summary Type of study The Wellcome Trust’s public engagement team have developed a toolkit, Responsive Dialogues, to improve public engagement on AMR. This is a qualitative evaluation of the impact of the Responsive Dialogues on improving public engagement on AMR. Problem statement Responsive Dialogues is an approach for inclusive problem solving and policy making. The toolkit uses participatory approaches to bring together communities and key stakeholders. Through the process, stakeholders jointly examine and unpack evidence, data and messages provided by researchers and experts, and come up with solutions to address critical health issues. This approach is novel in tackling complex, value-ridden societal problems by addressing fragmented efforts and bringing different voices together to solve them. Currently, it is unclear how effective the toolkit is in facilitating dialogue and co-creating solutions. Malawi is one of the countries that have been selected to pilot the toolkit. Objectives The main objective of the study is to examine the effectiveness of Responsive Dialogues in informing policies, National Action Plans and local solutions for addressing AMR in Malawi. Specific objectives of the study include: o To explore stakeholders’ perceptions and understandings of AMR o To describe examples of interventions or activities that stakeholders have taken following participation in the public engagement events o To describe the process of implementing the RDs including successes and challenges encountered by facilitators and attendees of the public engagement events Methods The study will draw on qualitative inquiry. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, and analysed by using thematic analysis approach.
